@softraid-support Great - my Mac & Thunderbay have been up and running for about 3 hours now.

Thanks for your help. Also for the info about macOS Ventura!

Hi Sorry didn't have time to try the workaround yet... in the meanwhile the solution I found is that still having my old Intel iMac I connect the drive to the Intel IMac and I share the drive from that computer ...

Will try later today. I'm not going to change the stripe I have more than 40T .. too much time consuming...

Thank you for the hint ! I also noticed that in my THunderbolt Chain I have 2 enclosures... one of them is always generating immediately the crash but if I connect only the 2nd one the system works... kind of weird.

@theubster

Are both enclosures RAID 5? if not, that would make sense.

I also have 2 Thunderbay enclosures and both use Raid5 with 16KB stripe unit size. One of mine causes the crash and the other seems fine so far.

I don't know whats up with that.

As an update, the 'pull out a drive for 5' workaround worked fine for me as I often don't restart for days/weeks at a time.

I updated to macOS 12.5.1 yesterday and didn't need the work around. Running for a day without any crashes.

Hello, several months later, I will need my OWC Thunderbay to work as I currently have an expensive door stopper sitting here. No, removing disks or waiting for the system to load and only switching Raid on 5 minutes later is not really an option. So question again have you fixed the compatibility issues with 12.x? I'm currently on 12.6?

If not, please explain how I format the Disk in 64k so that I can use the Raid as advertised.

As I can't see that option

@steve223

the bug is an ARM bug, Apple is fixing this in Ventura, which is out in a couple weeks.

What you have to do is delete the volume, then create it again selecting 64k Stripe unit size.

ok found it it's in the next step, and so far no crashes when keeping Thunderbay connected after restart

ok stripe 64 formats fixed the crashing issues when restarting Mac, however, unlike every other Raid I have 2 x Drobos (RIP) 1 x Promis Pegasus and a 1 x Qnap TR-004 the OWC Thunderbay 4 will not automatically mount after a restart. Need to switch Thunderbay on and off so it does appear on the Desktop.

Suggestions

@steve223

Lets diagnose this way.

when it is not mounted, run SoftRAID
does the enclosure show up?
if you expand the disk tile, is there a Disk Identifier? (like disk7)?
I assume there is no mount point, either?

this will tell you if this is hardware (not showing up), or driver (no mount point)
If there is no disk identifier, run this in the terminal:

sudo kextstat -b com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID
(this tells you if the driver is loaded)

if not, what is the output to this command:
sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext
(Does your volume mount as soon as you issue this command?)

Its possible something is preventing the driver from initiallly loading. Run through all these, report back and lets see where this is going wrong.

does not show up when running SoftRaid

Needs to manual switch Thunderbay on and off to appear

can be reproduced after every restart

@steve223

If SoftRAID does not see the drives in the left column, this is a hardware problem.

Does it happen with all buses? All ports on the enclosure?How old is the enclosure?

@softraid-support only has the one enclosure purchased Order Date: September 15, 2020 from you guys but pretty much has been sitting unused on the shelf for most time due to all the compatibility issues
