Hey. Here is the scenario:

  • 4 SSDs in RAID4 config mounted by SoftRaid
  • User has their home on that RAID
  • How do I / an admin / the user repair the permissions in their home?

From what I can see, in Big Sur you have to enter Recovery Mode, start a Terminal, and enter "repairHomePermissions".

  • If anyone uses Recovery Mode, of course the RAID is not mounted yet, so repairing their home does not work.
  • If an admin does that from a running system, when the RAID is accessible, he will get an error that the launch path is not accessible, probably due to the fact that the recovery partition is not mounted when the system is up and running
  • If the user does that, the same thing happens.

So how does a user repair their home permissions?

I am not sure, would have to research this. But if you check the Volume preference to "mount volumes when user not logged in", does that work?

No, does not work. I guess booting from the recovery partition will omit the Softzraid driver being loaded, thus the RAID can not be seen by the OS. That is something you will probably have to check with Apple. They need to include your driver in their recovery partition... This kinda sucks. My ACLs are wrong, and I have no way to repair them.... well, no easy way.

We discussed this today and are going to look for a way to support this. But it would not be immediate, although it is a great idea and we want to see what we can do about this.

I am sorry that I am bothering you with this stupid setup of mine. For me, that is actually a big problem, because I have had my home on a RAID for a long time (used to be a Promise Pegasus, where I did not have that problem due to it being a hardware raid, and Apple just changing this recently)... If I can do anything to help you guys with getting this to run, let me know :)

One thing I have done in the past, is leave the home folder on the internal drive, but then alias the contents of Music, video, etc (the larger folders) on an external RAID volume. What if you tried that?

then you can "ignore ownerships" on the external volume and should be OK.'

I don't think we would have a solution in the next few weeks, so lets see if we can find a interim solution.

Yeah, that would not work, since at the moment of repairing the permissions, the linked files would not be available... So same problem there :)

Need to try the ignore ownership thing though...
