@henry-in-florida

This is not a panic I have seen, but I don't look for this. Its not related to SoftRAID, as far as I can see.
Try this. In your system with this issue, uninstall SoftRAID. restart.
your volume should still mount. Confirm this.
install the 7.5 b20 beta.
It should show 60+ days remaining.
Are you getting any other SoftRAID pop ups besides the beta?
Do you have system Startup Security enabled for third parties, or set to not allow third party developers?

thanks

Note: any kernel panic, on restart, I almost always see the Apple Feedback window pop up, sometimes after a few minutes. Or, the "report to Apple" pop up.
It would be unusual to get neither.

@SoftRAID Support

Hi,

In answer to your query:

  1. Already tried and reported. Last uninstalled SoftRAID on this device on 3/12/2023.
  2. Restarted.Note that when restarting I (still) get a notice of a SoftRAID version present and expiring in 1 hour. After a time of no activity in this regard, I get another notice of expired Beta version of SoftRAID. If I let the Mac go to sleep (inactivity) that's when trouble begins (crashes, etc., all documented).
  3. Volume(s) formatted with SoftRAID (a RAID4 volume and and Extra volume) on other volumes still mounted at that time without problem.
  4. Install of B20 does not work. Same issue as reported in the past: Cannot install warning.
  5. I have not checked lately after recovering from crash and the like but when MacOS was installed, the Security settings were at reduced Security.

So would you like me to roll over this again and re-document the above steps with nothing new, checking Startup Security first? It'll be a couple of days before I can do so.

I should also mention for clarity, my trouble posts began on 3/9/2023 with the recurring non-installation of the SR Helper on beta 7.5 b19 and moved forward to 7.5 b20 the latest beta on your site.

Again trying your suggestions after confirming Startup Security Policy is set to allow local users (not third party developers remote access) to modify kext:

  1. Boot into the Ventura beta OS.
  2. Pop-up #1 appears.
    Screenshot 2023 03 13 at 07.53.13
  3. Load up the SR 7.5b20 app. Requests to install helper.
    Screenshot 2023 03 13 at 07.56.34

  4. Result of request...
    Screenshot 2023 03 13 at 07.56.53

Clear? Should I change that to allow remote access. That is a choice of the bottom checkbox. I cannot send you a picture of that one. I believe the working version of 13.2.1 has the same settings.

Also attempted to try the two other possible Reduced Security Settings: Remote management or BOTH local and remote checkboxes. Neither of the three possibilities made ANY difference to the loading of the SR 7.5 b20 Helper tool. Epic fail. Went back to what I consider to be the correct setting (User management.. check box. Still have the crash when MacOS sleeps which now appears to be unrelated to SR though and will report elsewhere. 🤩

On a MacStudio M1 Ultra MacOS Version 13.3 Beta (22E5236f) Softraid beta 7.5 b20/driver b19. As forever, if I login with a 3 disk Raid 5 powered up in a 4 disk OWC enclosure, other disk is Time Machine, I get a panic crash that happens just after logging in on a startup, every time. No problems if the enclosure is not powered up -- then after login, I can power up the enclosure and the Raid 5 and Time Machine are mounted up normally with not further problems.

Is this the known DART panic?

I believe I have all the panic dump files. If you want some, let me know which ones.

@tomnash

The way to know is after the crash, "report to Apple", click details, and look at that panic log. In the Beta Ventura versions, it usually brings up the Developer Feedback window, asking to send to Apple. If it does, the last file is the panic log (ends in .panic)  Look at that file and see if dart-apciec1 is in the top couple lines. Then you know it is the DART panic.

Yes, dart-apciec1 is there...  Looking back, I see we discussed this panic almost a year ago on this thread. Do you have any idea when Apple may fix it. Since I know the work around it is not much more than a slight PITA... but it is aesthetically very ugly on an otherwise glorious system of hardware and software...

@tomnash

Highly likely this will be fixed in 13.4. It appears 13.3 is near release, and hopefully people running the beta 13.4 will be able to confirm this quickly. I would guess 2-3 months for 13.4 or so. Possibly less, this is all guesswork.

I upgraded to Ventura 13.4 beta1 and have restarted on 3 occasions with one or two raid 5s attached without encountering the dart panic.  This is probably good news, but if I recall correctly last summer I had a period of time with no panics. So the panics have not been solidly consistent over the last year.  I suspect that the dynamic memory location of some code may be associate with why this happens sometimes and not others. That could have been related last summer to an Apple release that moved the code or some other low level code moved (say Adobe). Anyway, at the moment it works.

Another very minor issue FYI, I get the message in the attached every time for one of the raid 5s. The problem resolves by the time I open SoftRaid. That raid is in a slightly unusual configuration in a 4 slot OWC enclosure: the 2TB raid consists of 3 1 TB volumes, 2 of which are on 1 TB disks, 1 shares space with another 1 TB volume on a 2 TB disk. The 4th slot in the enclosure has a 6 TB disk used for Time Machine. Maybe this delays the formation of the Raid 5 and SoftRAID issues a warning a bit early? Anyway since this is a beta, I thought I would mention it.

@tomnash

This is the kind of information I need to hear! No more panics. I was hoping for confirmation.
Once we get the public telling us it is fixed (which you are number one), then we can tell everyone. We cannot break the news, but can "rebroadcast it.

13.4 *should* fix the DART issues, I am so glad to hear this. Any other users with 13.4, please chime in.

I am not sure on the other, except the SoftRAID driver may load faster now, as it is in /System/Library/Extensions, rather than /Library/Extensions.

Set SoftRAID preferences to (RAID) for the timeout to 30 seconds and see if the message goes away. We may need to tweak this time out if this is the case, to avoid alarming users when there is nothing wrong.

I set the timeout to 1 minute, the next option up after the default 15 sec. There was no 30 sec option. The missing disks message did not appear on a new restart.

I should mention that this was happening for some time before the 13.4 upgrade on various recent SoftRAID betas. At one point, SoftRaid insisted on rebuilding the raid a couple of times after restarts and that took quite some time. That went away and all I got was the message for a while until just now when I changed the timeout.

@tomnash

If you actually got restarts, that is not great. It is an indicator that disks are taking too long to spin up or appear. the 1 minute timeout will help, as SoftRAID will not try to mount until all pieces are present, or 1 minute goes by.

I'm on Studio M1 Max with 2x Flex 1U4's.

I had frequent kernel panics before trying the beta (13.3.1) but since upgrading to the beta, none. Current system uptime is ~120 hours.

Looks good so far!
