[Sticky] Big Sur on M1 machines and SoftRAID issues

Hi! I'm having the same issue as the previous User. I've got a new M1 Mac Mini, running Big Sur 11.1, and SoftRaid Beta b48. At first SoftRaid would see my Raid 5 setup but would not mount until I restarted and allowed the Extension changes. 

Now however, when I turn on my Raid, my mac will shortly freeze, flash pink and restart. After doing this a few times, it gave me the Panic Medic Boot. I've been trying to understand from this thread whether there's anything I can do to fix or work around this issue right now? Or do I just have to wait for a new SoftRaid or Apple update? 

I have the Error Report which I can send if that's helpful? I tried attaching it here as a .rtf, txt, and pdf but it kept saying none of those formats are allowed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

This also sounds like you have a Mercury Elite Pro, connected with USB and a USB C to A connector type. If so, connect with a C to C cable and it will be OK. This is a reported kernel bug, we do not know when it will be fixed.

So the SoftRAID 6.0.1b48 beta express in 20 days.  Will there be a new beta before then for M1 Macs or should we go over to the trial track?

Beta versions will not expire before 6.0 is released. There are new beta's released before they expire.

@softraid-support Thank you! Yes, this worked! My Probox RAID unit was connected with a USB C to A cable, but swapping it to a C to C has worked! I appreciate the help!

@softraid-support while my RAID is now connecting, this morning I've been suffering from it disconnecting and again crashing my Mac Mini. Do you have any thoughts on why this is?

Well yesterday I had to bite the bullet and spend more money than I wanted on new RAID drives to replace all my OWC drives.  I'm especially pissed about the ThunderBlade which I was using for my short term project drive.  But the fact that I can no longer count on my drives mounting from day to day is unacceptable.  I need raid drives that will mount on any Mac running any operating system day to day.  This is a critically flawed program/operating system/hardware combo.  I think OWC should not sell drives with softraid any longer.  I know the enginneers at SoftRaid are working hard to deal with the OS issues and I appreciate that, but when you step back and look at the problem, there is no guarantee that it won't continue for years to come.  

@dannry Makes sense. According to Apple they patched the sudo-bug and that's pretty much it, so no change in the way they handle system extensions....

@dannry Thanks for testing and reporting this.  Softraid, you should update your banner Critical announcement to include 11.2.1.  While I realize that this incompatibility is not Softraid's fault, it's getting really frustrating not being able to update to a stable Apple OS release for an extended period of time because Softraid is not compatible.  Coupled with the fact that the beta hasn't been updated in coming up on 2 months soon, it's hard to imagine a Softraid 6 with all predicted features in 2021.

This M1 issue is transient, it was a major change, and despite assurances by Apple, it was not 100% smooth for everyone. This adds meaning to the phrase "Bleeding edge", which many of us experienced in the earlier days of personal computing. We now expect it all to work 100% of the time, which is a sign of how reliable computers have become.

However, cyber intrusions have put Apple (and all hardware/software companies) in a bad light, as this same ease of use is easily exploited. The positive side of all this is Apple is doing a darn good job of minimizing hacks, intrusions, etc in macOS. So while we at SoftRAID feel a major brunt of this, we can understand why it happens. Apple cannot afford a major exploit and are moving mountains to avoid one.

When 11.3 is released, that will fix this round. Apple is moving the driver model to a more stable one, which they have announced starts with the next macOS release (12.0?) We will have a driver ready, if Apple is ready. Then issues like this will not happen again.

As to hardware RAID, it has its own issues. most companies simply stop supporting older controllers after a few years, and obsolescence is built in. We are still supporting older hardware, such as the original Mac Pro, and FireWire enclosures with SoftRAID, investments users made well over 10 years ago. Every thunderbolt enclosure ever shipped is still actively supported by SoftRAID. Try to find a 5 year old controller card for a failed hardware RAID.

The Thunderblade is a very nice design, quiet and fast. I have a feeling you will find it useful still.
